Explanation
The combination of PHP, SQL queries and markup (in some places) is disgusting. Add to that a total lack of documentation, and you have Zen Cart. If it weren’t for the user forums, wiki and their FAQ (all user-generated for the most part) it would be an undocumented system. Granted part of the blame may lie with PHP itself, since it encourages this mash-up of templates, DB lookups, and code.

I wouldn’t say PHP encourages it, certainly makes it easy. This website is built in PHP and you won’t see any of that mash-up here!
All the free Cart software I’ve seen have similar issues.
